"We worked with Teachers College, Columbia to develop a survey as part of our strategic planning. As a school of choice, it was essential to have parent input as a part of the process. The online format easily allowed parents to complete the survey at a convenient time and to provide the leadership team with satisfaction data as well as open ended responses. Being able to aggregate responses in a numeric way allowed us to look at trends in the data, while the free response ensured that we had the context to make good decisions. This survey allowed our parents to feel a part of the decision making process when it comes to setting priorities and goals. The fact that the survey questions had been used at numerous other schools throughout the nation allowed us to compare the responses of our community to that of other similar schools. Not only were the data timely for our use in strategic planning, the final report produced by Teachers College, Columbia was publication ready and we posted it on our school's website to ensure transparency with our community. As part of our strategic planning and budgeting process, the data received was immediately actionable and led our administration and board to re-examine our academic program and communication plan. We were able to customize certain parts of the survey to ensure that the unique aspects of our program were evaluated, while still using the base survey, which allows for comparisons.
